Families and neighbors - Your neighborhood schools have partnered together to address a growing concern: speeding through the neighborhoods and not properly stopping at crosswalks.

South Tampa traffic is getting worse and the streets surrounding our schools are becoming popular thoroughfares.  School PTAs are working with city officials on many safety enhancements, but we are asking our families and neighbors to help with a simple action - full stops before crosswalks and slower driving.

With daylight savings upon us, our students and families will be out and about even more. Take a moment to be honest about your own driving habits. Are you fully stopping and assessing sidewalk traffic before evaluating the roadway? Indeed, it’s necessary at many stops to inch into the crosswalk to safely see the road, but please stop to assess the crosswalk traffic first, before inching forward.

If you have a walker or biker in the household, please remind them of their responsibility as well to stop and look before proceeding into a crosswalk.  There are many crosswalks where blind spots exist (this is especially important to relay to middle grade students).

If we all set the tone for driving patiently and cautiously, then perhaps others will too and our once quiet, undiscovered neighborhoods will get quieter once more – and possibly become undesirable to use for passing through! Please share this message with every driver in your household and thank you for your assistance in this matter.

The Hillsborough County School Board is proposing changes to the boundaries of Grady, Coleman and Plant. They intend to move students and families from our A rated schools to C- rated schools. We must stand up and protect our children's future!

ATTENTION NEIGHBORS: ACT NOW

AGAINST THE PROPOSED SCHOOL BOUNDARY CHANGES

WHICH MAY ELIMINATE OUR KIDS’ ACCESS TO

A-RATED COLEMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND PLANT HIGH SCHOOL

Who is affected: Homes in North Bon Air, Westshore Palms, Beach Park and Oakford Park areas have been targeted in scenario 2 & 3 in the Hillsborough County Public School Boundary Analysis as being rezoned from A rated schools (Coleman and Plant) to C rated schools (Pierce and Jefferson). We are asking all neighbors to speak out and support scenario 1 which keeps Coleman and Plant in our district.

Why should you care:

  • Scenario 2 & 3 will drop property values – many bought homes here for Plant school zoning
  • Our kids’ education is at stake - children will be moved from A-rated to C-rated schools
  • Scenario 2 & 3 target diverse and middle-lower class families in our neighborhood – Plant already has the highest % of white students in the entire school district (68% white). Many of the 17% Hispanic, 5% black, 3% Asian live in our neighborhood
  • Lack of transparency - The school district presented this information with a limited timeframe and lack of accurate research for our growing community. Changes could take effect in the 2023/2024 school year
  • SCENARIO 1 saves the school district money and impacts the fewest people.

What you can do to help prevent our homes in the Grady/Coleman/Plant Districts from being re-zoned:

  • MOST IMORTANT – ATTEND THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING Jan 10th -4-6pm at ROSSAC: 901 E. Kennedy Blvd
  • Sign the petition: https://www.change.org/NOtoRezone
  • Submit comments often through the boundary analysis map (Say no to Scenarios 2&3 in support of each other): www.hcps-boundary.org
  • Contact the superintendent and school board members.  Our school board representative is Stacy Hahn ([email protected]).  Our superintendent is Addison Davis ([email protected])
  • Share on social media or message/post on the HCPS Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HillsboroughSch
  • Join your neighbors to discuss other ideas to stop this rezoning in the Facebook Group: HCPS-Boundary Change
