Deadline to sign up to participate: January 20, 2017

Deadline to submit entries: February 6, 2017

Parent Reception to see SLAM Showcase:  February 9, 2017 from 8:10 am to 9:10 am in the Media Center

Dear Grady Families,

Library Media Services is proud to introduce a new district program and event for the 2016-2017 school year. The Student Literacy and Media (SLAM) Showcase will be a celebration of reading and literacy through students’ artistic and digital expressions in response to quality literature from state reading award lists (Sunshine State Young Readers Award and The Florida Reading Association Children’s Book Award). It is important for our students to read independently for pleasure. Through their participation in SLAM, students will have the opportunity to select books from these award lists that were chosen for their “wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections and/or multicultural representation.”

Students will then have the opportunity to share their creativity in response to what they have read by creating a 2D art piece or a digital book trailer. These creations will be showcased at our school SLAM on Thursday, February 9.  There will be a Parent Reception during which parents are invited to view the SLAM Showcase entries from 8:10 am to 9:10 am on February 9.  Exemplary selections will be chosen and those students will go on to the District SLAM on March 22, 2017 at the Tampa Convention Center to celebrate their reading and creativity.

There are guidelines for participation, as well as different grade level divisions in which to participate, which are have for your review. Any further questions can be directed to Mr. Tsourakis in the media center.

While it is our hope that all of our students develop the habit of reading for pleasure, participation in SLAM is voluntary. The intent is to give our students a creative alternative when responding to what they have read. We want them to READ, EXPLORE and CREATE!

If your child is interested in participation please have them sign up in the media center.  The deadline to sign up to participate in SLAM is January 20, 2017.  The deadline to submit SLAM Showcase entries is February 6, 2017.  We will be hosting an informational meeting soon after school.

Sincerely,

Nick Tsourakis, Grady Elementary Media Specialist
